The A to Z of Your Story and Mine
In the last book of the Bible, the book of the Revelation,
chapter 21 and verse 6, we read God describing Himself thus, “I am the
Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.” What do these words
mean, and how do they apply to our lives? In order to better understand them,
looking at the immediate context helps.
Immediately before introducing Himself as the Alpha and Omega,
the Apostle John, the author of Revelation, records God as saying (Rev. 21:6), “Then
He said to me, “It is done.” Which
naturally begs the question, “What is done?” The preceding chapters of
Revelation tell us how the judgment of the Devil and unbelievers, the
destruction of the old world, and the establishing of the new world, are all accomplished.
Immediately after introducing himself as the Alpha and Omega,
God makes this promise (Rev. 21:6), “I will give to the one who thirsts
from the spring of the water of life, without cost.” In other words, in
the Heaven, God will satisfy the deepest thirsts and desires of the human heart
fully, and eternally. He surely satisfies our needs and desires in this world.
But in Heaven, there will be no end to it. And this satisfaction is free to the
one who comes, because the price has been paid for by God, in the death of His
Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross. Jesus has overcome sin, Satan, and death by
dying and rising again. So that now, we who are in Christ can overcome the sin
that promises satisfaction but never delivers. Sin might be likened to a corrupt
and crooked politician who makes promises before he or she is elected, but never
delivers once put in office. God is not that way. What God promises, He most
assuredly performs.
It is the One who pronounces “It is done,” and
then promises eternal satisfaction to all who come to Him, who also describes
Himself as “the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.”
Why does God use Ἀ
& Ὠ
to describe Himself? We know that Ἀ is the
first letter of the Greek alphabet, and is Ὠ the last,
all other letters being in between, like the letters A and Z in English. Letters
are used to form words. Words are used to form sentences, and sentences to craft
stories. God says here, “I am the author of history, of eternity, your
destiny—the One who writes your story. As the Ἀ
& Ὠ,
if you trust me with your life, I will write your story perfectly, you will not
be disappointed, but perfectly satisfied.”
With all that is going on in the world, especially in this year 2020, you and I would do well to commit, or recommit, the writing of our life story to the Ἀ & Ὠ.
If you do not know Him, today you can believe on Jesus
Christ, ask for and receive the forgiveness of your sins, know God personally,
and turn over the writing of your life’s story to Him. There is no Author like
the Ἀ
& Ὠ,
who has the power and prowess to write not only your destiny and story, but to
write it in such a way that it fits most meaningfully within the grand
narrative of history and eternity He is writing.
